POV: On Handling Emotions...

It's day 166 of documenting 2025.
Happy Weekend my friend ☺️
I hope your week went well...
Mine was....revealing.
I finally figured out why I usually scrolled mindlessly or sometimes default to watching videos when there's work to be done.
Escapism.
But I had a chat with AI about it....which opened up my understanding.
Talking with my friend also made me feel better and reinforced my self-control.
In other news...
Yesterday was quite cold 🥶
It rained all morning and afternoon...and the cold carried on till nighttime.
I hope it's a bit warmer today.
What's the topic for today?
Let's explore Highlights and Meditations.
And see what we can learn.
365 Days With Self-discipline
📌 On Handling Emotions
"People with a strong physical constitution can tolerate extremes of hot and cold; people of strong mental health can handle anger, grief, joy and the other emotions."
Quote by Epictetus
"While people usually associate self-discipline with the ability to resist temptations (such as laziness or overeating), another equally (if not more) important benefit of self-control is the increased ability to control your emotions.
Both negative and positive feelings make our lives more exciting, but they can also jeopardize our long-term goals if we let them influence our behavior too much."
"For example, if you’re impatient and tend to rush things, one wrong,
emotionally-motivated decision can destroy the progress of many months or years."
"A more disciplined approach to impatience — recognizing the difference between when the emotion can actually inspire positive change and when it’s a sign of dissatisfaction with something you can’t control — would serve you more than letting impatience dictate all of your behaviors."
"A more disciplined approach to joy — expressing your happiness and
gratitude for your success, and then reminding yourself that you still have a lot to learn and promptly looking for another challenge — would serve you more than jumping from joy and assuming that now that you’ve accomplished your goal, you’re a world-class expert and now nothing will ever stand in your way."
"Be vigilant of both your positive and negative emotions and understand the risk they can carry with them when left unchecked."
I get the message here.
How about you, my friend?
Do you think your emotions can increase or jeopardize your chances of success?
Real food for thought 🤔
Once, I read in a book by Napoleon Hill (can't remember the name now...)
In that particular chapter, he talked about various causes of failure.
Among them is the inability to control one's emotions.
I'm still a learner in that aspect...
In the whole control-your-emotions thing.
Sometimes I keep my emotions in check.
Other times, I just flare up.
I wouldn't say baby steps because I can hold myself from punching someone in the face when they insult me.
Just saying 😏
Alright, let's move to Meditations.
Meditations
📌 Life
Okay, I finished the chapter few days ago...
But I didn't want to move to the next without understanding the "lessons" Marcus wrote about.
Among them are two which I recognized to be about life.
14. Even if you’re going to live three thousand more years, or ten times that, remember: you cannot lose another life than the one you’re living now, or live another one than the one you’re losing.
The longest amounts to the
same as the shortest. The present is the same for everyone; its loss is the same for everyone; and it should be clear that a brief instant is all that is lost.
For you can’t lose either the past or the future; how could you lose what you don’t have?
Remember two things:
i. that everything has always been the same, and keeps recurring, and it makes no difference whether you see the same things recur in a hundred years or two hundred, or in an infinite period;
ii. that the longest-lived and those who will die soonest lose the same thing.
The present is all that they can give up, since that is all you have, and what you do not have, you cannot lose.
17. Human life.
Duration: momentary.
Nature: changeable.
Perception: dim.
Condition of Body: decaying.
Soul: spinning around.
Fortune: unpredictable.
Lasting Fame: uncertain.
Sum Up: The body and its parts are a river, the soul a dream and mist, life is warfare and a journey far from home, lasting reputation is oblivion.
Then what can guide us?
Only philosophy.
Which means making sure that the power within stays safe and free from assault, superior to pleasure and pain, doing nothing randomly or dishonestly and with imposture, not dependent on anyone else’s doing something or not doing it.
And making sure that it accepts what happens and what it is dealt as coming from the same place it came from. And above all, that it accepts death in a cheerful spirit, as nothing but the dissolution of the elements from which each living thing is composed.
If it doesn’t hurt the individual elements to change continually into one another, why are people afraid of all of them changing and separating? It’s a natural thing.
And nothing natural is evil.
Trust me on this,
You will definitely understand what all these mean if you read them out loud.
I tried it...worked like magic.
Sometimes, you have to read a particular part twice...and that's okay 👍
That's all for today's sections, my friend
